You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. Clay P. Bedford

Dear Parents,
Welcome to second grade! We hope you had a fun and relaxing summer! We are looking forward to the upcoming school year and working with all of you.
It is our goal to help your child be successful in school and excited about learning. If we work together we can ensure that they succeed.
We will spend the first month getting to know one another, making new friends, establishing routines and procedures and building community within our class.
Science News
Our first science unit will be an exploration of weather.
LITERACY NEWS
Literacy News
During the Literacy block we will be engaged in a variety of shared and interactive reading and writing activities that focus on “friendship” and “community”, as well as word study activities, work board centers and writer’s workshop.
MATH NEWS
Math News
Each child will bring home a student math handbook to keep for the year. These are issued to the students on the first day and need to be returned at the end of the year. It is designed as a resource for both students and parents, particularly when working on homework. The math program is designed to help students develop a deep conceptual understanding of our number system as well as efficient problem solving strategies.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call us at school or send an email. We are available before or after school most days.

SPELLING
Every Monday your child will bring home a packet of spelling activities; one to be completed each night of the week (Monday-Thursday). Attached to the packet is a list of their spelling words. These will be used to complete the homework assignments. The activities are designed to help your child practice and learn the words. You will find the directions printed on the top of each sheet.
On Friday, the completed packet should be returned to school and there will be a spelling test to check for mastery. Any words that are misspelled will go back on their list for the next week.
