March 10, 2010
Dear Parents and Students:
We are still looking for some Proof of Residency certificates with 2 forms of proof. We only need one set per family, so if you have sent your 2 forms of proof in with a sibling, please just write that at the bottom of your certificate. Thanks, in advance, for your cooperation.
Mrs. Mari and Ms. diCurcio have arranged for Mordicai Gerstein, a Calecott Medal winning author and illustrator, to visit our school. This is a unique opportunity for our students. They are calling it a "stay in" field trip and have asked each family to donate $2.oo to help defray the cost. If you choose to donate, please place your donation in an envelope with your name. One lucky donator will receive an autographed copy of Mr. Gerstein's book, The Man Who Walked Between The Towers.
Please consider donating to this exciting event. Thank you.

More Great News
from Room 3

Congratulations go out to our two PeaceBuilder classmates:
Caitlin K. and Sarah F.
Caitlin K. received a special PeaceBuilder award because she saw a friend getting bullied and she sought out an advisor to help her stop it. We all need to follow Caitlin's example and NEVER stand by while someone else is being bullied. It is everyone's responsibility to keep Norris School a safe environment. Congratulations and thank you, Caitlin!!!!!

Sarah F. also received a Peacebuilder Award for her fundraising efforts for Pennies for Peace. Sarah held a bake sale and raised $42.00 to help build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is said that education is the best way to fight terrorism, because children who are educated can see a bright future. Thank you, Sarah, for helping to "build" peace!

Ben F. from Mrs. Heath's homeroom had a GREAT idea. He asked his extended family to gather their pennies and bring them to the next family party. He explained to them about the fundraising efforts of our 5th grade student council and about the Pennies for Peace campaign. Ben's family filled a LARGE container (that Mrs. Burke could hardly lift) with approximately 6,000 pennies!
Thank you, Ben, for your BRILLIANT idea!
Another Awesome Idea came from Collin T. in Mr. Moynihan's room. Collin raked his neighbors leaves with a friend and he decided to give his portion of their earnings to Pennies for Peace. He added $28.00 to our collection!
Thank you, Collin, for all your hard work and your dedication to help students in other countries!
See a clip of the 5th grade on Channel 3's weather report!
Join in the (optional) weekly trivia contest.
You will receive a trivia question each week, which will be due on Thursday. If you get the correct answer, your name will be added to the drawing. One name (from each class) will be chosen, per week, to receive a prize from the prize drawer. Everyone who attempts to answer at least five questions will receive extra credit.
Last week's trivia winners:
Mrs. Burke's Homeroom: Meaghan R. Mrs. Heath's Homeroom:
Mr. Moynihan's Room: Megan H., Collin T.
Mrs. Sullivan's Homeroom: Paige L., Nathan S., Amanda L., Meghan D.
CONGRATULATIONS to all those who participated!
This week's trivia question :
STUDENT COUNCIL
A BIG thank you to the first Norris School 5th grade student council representatives. You did an excellent job raising money for the Central Asia Institute using the Pennies for Peace campaign! We appreciate all you efforts and enthusiasm!
The new student council has decided to raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti. With the help of Ms. Keefe and Mrs. Salomao, the 5th grade will sponsor a school-wide Read-a-thon during the month of February. Students will seek pledges during the first week, then read their books and collect their pledges for the remainder of the month. Parents, please encourage your children to participate in this worthy cause!

How Organized Are Your Notebooks?
Below are your notebook indexes. You can check to see if you have everything written down, numbered, and your pages are in order. If one of the classes has not yet received a page in the notebook, it will be written in a different color.
